The law

Louisiana contracts with automatic renewal clauses

  • Citation: La. R.S. 9:2716
  • Effective: 2011-01-01
  • Status: In force
  • Verified: 2026-10-29, official text read in full (confidence: high)

Clear and conspicuous disclosure of the automatic renewal clause and of how to cancel. Contracts renewed in violation revert to thirty-day renewals; good-faith-error defense with refund.

Scope: Consumer contracts entered into from Jan. 1, 2011; contracts cancellable on one month's written notice after the initial period are exempt.

Louisiana Click-to-Cancel Act

Effective Jan. 1, 2027: offer terms next to acceptance (renewal terms capped at one year absent express written consent); affirmative consent; acknowledgment; one-year consent records; pre-billing notice; easy cancellation; material-change notice; notice at least 3 days before renewals of 12+ months, material changes and trial conversions. AG civil penalty up to $500 per violation after a 30-day cure period.

Scope: Consumers buying for personal, family or household purposes. Excludes persons with fewer than 50 employees or under $5 million annual revenue (with affiliates), rental-purchase agreements, financial institutions, insurers, FCC-regulated services, member/trade-association programs and professional subscription services; does not supersede R.S. 51:3144-3145.

Requirements

Each row is one obligation in the catalog, in plain English, with the provision it comes from. "Applies when" lists the conditions under which it applies (otherwise it always applies to covered offers). The ids are stable and match the dataset and Checkbox API results.
