The law

Minnesota automatic renewal and continuous service law

Offer terms before acceptance; no charge before authorization; confirmation with termination options; material-change notice; 5-30 day notice for trials over 30 days; yearly notice for continuous service; no retention offers without opt-in; website termination election for sellers with account management; termination effective within 31 days. Good-faith compliance bars civil penalties (§ 325G.63).

Scope: Indefinite subscription agreements with Minnesota consumers (including health club, buying club and social referral contracts). Exempt (§ 325G.62): contracts governed by another automatic-renewal statute or regulation, insurance licensees, licensed technology system contractors, PUC/FCC/FERC-regulated services, FINRA/SEC/state-securities registrants.

Requirements

Each row is one obligation in the catalog, in plain English, with the provision it comes from. "Applies when" lists the conditions under which it applies (otherwise it always applies to covered offers). The ids are stable and match the dataset and Checkbox API results.

Cancelling

RequirementApplies whenEffectiveCitation
No retention offers after a cancellation request unless the consumer opts in; no abusive tactics After receiving a cancellation or termination notice, the seller may not misrepresent or use unfair or abusive tactics to delay or avoid cancellation, and may not make retention offers, benefits, modifications or gifts unless the consumer grants permission after giving notice (asked only once per attempt). The seller may ask (without requiring an answer) why the consumer is cancelling, explain consequences, verify identity, and describe downgrade, pause or suspension options.

always2025-01-01Minn. Stat. § 325G.58, subds. 4-5
Website "termination election" for sellers with account or subscription management A seller whose website has profile or subscription-management capabilities must include a clear and conspicuous termination election that tells consumers in plain language they can terminate at any time, asks only for information needed to process the termination, and uses a checkbox, submit button or similarly simple mechanism — regardless of how the consumer signed up.

Automatic-renewal terminations take effect at the end of the current term (or a later term the consumer picks); continuous-service terminations must take effect no later than 31 days after a verified notice (unless the consumer chooses a later date).

Notice windows

When each notice must be sent. A notice outside its window does not count, so schedule sends against the exact dates.

Who can sue, and remedies

Private right of action: Indirectly: private suits go through general consumer-protection law.

Attorney General enforcement; a private action is likely available through Minnesota's private attorney general statute (unverified); good-faith compliance bars civil penalties.

Remedy figures come from the cited statutes and from public enforcement records summarized in Checkbox's litigation research; figures from secondary sources are marked "unverified" where they appear.

Check your subscription flow

Checkbox evaluates these requirements automatically: the sign-up page, the emails and the cancellation flow are checked against Minnesota's rules (and every other jurisdiction's) on every check. 22 machine checks cover this page.
